Why Prolonged Bulking Is Not Optimal: How Mini-Cuts Can Help You Build Muscle Without Excessive Fat Gain

You start a bulk at 180 lb.
Then you eat more, train harder, recover well, and watch the scale climb.
- 190 lb.
- 200 lb.
- 210 lb.
- 220 lb.
The scale keeps going up, so it feels like you're making progress.
But there is one question that matters more than the number on the scale:
How much of that weight is actually muscle?
Gaining bodyweight and gaining muscle are not the same thing.
A calorie surplus can support muscle growth, but the body does not convert every additional calorie into muscle. As a gaining phase becomes more aggressive and continues for longer, a greater proportion of the additional bodyweight may come from fat.
And that creates a problem.
The more unnecessary fat you accumulate during a bulk, the more fat you eventually have to lose.
That can turn a productive muscle-building phase into an unnecessarily long cutting phase.
This is where mini-cuts can become useful.
What Is a Bulk?
A bulk, or gaining phase, is a period in which you intentionally consume enough calories to support muscle growth and increase bodyweight.
A typical muscle-building phase includes:
- A calorie surplus
- Progressive resistance training
- Adequate protein
- Sufficient recovery
- Consistent training
- Gradual increases in bodyweight
The objective is to create an environment that supports muscle growth.
However, being in a calorie surplus does not mean every additional calorie becomes muscle.
Your body can gain:
- Muscle tissue
- Fat tissue
- Water
- Glycogen
- Other lean tissues
Therefore:
Weight gain is not the same thing as muscle gain.
This distinction becomes increasingly important the longer a gaining phase continues.
Why Can a Prolonged Bulk Become a Problem?
Some amount of fat gain during a gaining phase is normal.
The problem begins when bodyweight continues increasing while the amount of additional lean tissue being gained becomes relatively small compared with the amount of fat being accumulated.
Imagine two people starting from exactly the same point.
Both begin at:
- 180 lb bodyweight
- 15% body fat
But they approach their gaining phases differently.
Person A follows a relatively controlled bulk.
Person B continues gaining for much longer and allows body fat to rise substantially.
Let's look at the math.
Starting Point: Both People
Both Person A and Person B start with:
- Bodyweight: 180 lb
- Body Fat: 15%
Starting Fat Mass = 180 × 0.15 = 27 lb
Starting Lean Body Mass = 180 − 27 = 153 lb
So both people start with approximately:
- 27 lb of fat + 153 lb of estimated lean body mass = 180 lb
From here, their gaining phases take different paths.
Person A: A More Controlled Bulk
Person A uses a controlled calorie surplus and monitors their progress.
After an extended gaining phase, suppose Person A reaches:
- Bodyweight: 220 lb
- Body Fat: 25%
Body Composition After the Bulk
- Current Fat Mass = 220 × 0.25 = 55 lb
- Current Lean Body Mass = 220 − 55 = 165 lb
Person A started with:
- 153 lb estimated lean body mass
and now has:
- 165 lb estimated lean body mass
Estimated Lean Body Mass Gain = 165 − 153 = 12 lb
Fat Mass Gain = 55 − 27 = 28 lb
So Person A gained:
- 40 lb total bodyweight
- 12 lb estimated lean body mass
- 28 lb fat mass
This illustrates an important point.
Person A did not gain 40 lb of muscle.
The 40 lb increase in bodyweight consisted of multiple components, with a substantial amount being fat.
What Happens If Person A Wants to Reach 10% Body Fat?
Now suppose Person A wants to reduce body fat to 10%.
If we make the theoretical assumption that Person A preserves all current estimated lean body mass, we can calculate the target bodyweight.
Theoretical Target Bodyweight
- Target Bodyweight = Estimated Lean Body Mass ÷ (1 − Target Body Fat)
- Target Bodyweight = 165 ÷ (1 − 0.10)
- Target Bodyweight = 165 ÷ 0.90
- Target Bodyweight ≈ 183.3 lb (83.1 kg)
Estimated Weight Loss Required
- Weight to Lose = Current Bodyweight − Target Bodyweight
- Weight to Lose = 220 − 183.3
- Weight to Lose ≈ 36.7 lb (16.6 kg)
So Person A would theoretically need to lose approximately 36.7 lb to reach 10% body fat while preserving all current estimated lean body mass.
What Does That Mean for a 12-Week Cut?
Let's use the commonly cited rough estimate:
- 1 lb of fat ≈ 3,500 calories
- This is only a simplified estimate and should not be interpreted as an exact physiological rule.
Using this simplified calculation:
- Total Energy Deficit = 36.7 × 3,500
Total Energy Deficit ≈ 128,450 calories
- Now suppose Person A wants to complete the entire cut in 12 weeks, or 84 days.
Theoretical Average Daily Deficit
- Daily Deficit = 128,450 ÷ 84
- Daily Deficit ≈ 1,530 calories/day
That is a very large theoretical deficit.
- This does not mean Person A should simply eat 1,530 calories below maintenance every day.
Real-world weight loss is not perfectly linear.
- As bodyweight decreases, energy expenditure can change. Water, glycogen, lean tissue, activity levels, hunger, and metabolic adaptations also influence the actual rate of weight loss.
The calculation is useful because it demonstrates the size of the problem created by accumulating a large amount of fat during the gaining phase.
Now let's look at Person B.
Person B: An Extremely Prolonged Bulk
Person B begins from exactly the same starting point:
-Bodyweight: 180 lb
-Body Fat: 15%
-Fat Mass: 27 lb
-Estimated Lean Body Mass: 153 lb
However, Person B continues gaining weight much further.
Eventually, Person B reaches:
-Bodyweight: 260 lb
-Body Fat: 35%
##This is an intentionally simplified hypothetical example designed to demonstrate the relationship between bodyweight, fat mass, and estimated lean body mass.
Person B's Body Composition - After the Bulk
- Current Fat Mass = 260 × 0.35 = 91 lb
- Current Lean Body Mass = 260 − 91 = 169 lb
Person B started with:
153 lb estimated lean body mass
and now has:
169 lb estimated lean body mass
Estimated Lean Body Mass Gain = 169 − 153 = 16 lb
Fat Mass Gain = 91 − 27 = 64 lb
Person B therefore gained:
- 80 lb total bodyweight
- 16 lb estimated lean body mass
- 64 lb fat mass
Now compare that with Person A.
- Person B gained 80 lb of bodyweight, which is twice as much as Person A's 40 lb gain.
- But Person B only gained approximately 4 lb more estimated lean body mass.
Person A:
+12 lb estimated lean body mass
Person B:
+16 lb estimated lean body mass
Meanwhile:
- Person A gained 28 lb of fat.
- Person B gained 64 lb of fat.
This is the key lesson:
- More weight gain does not necessarily produce proportionally more muscle gain.
What Happens If Person B Wants to Reach 10% Body Fat?
Again, let's assume that Person B preserves all current estimated lean body mass.
Theoretical Target Bodyweight
- Target Bodyweight = Estimated Lean Body Mass ÷ (1 − Target Body Fat)
- Target Bodyweight = 169 ÷ (1 − 0.10)
- Target Bodyweight = 169 ÷ 0.90
- Target Bodyweight ≈ 187.8 lb (85.2 kg)
Estimated Weight Loss Required
- Weight to Lose = Current Bodyweight − Target Bodyweight
- Weight to Lose = 260 − 187.8
- Weight to Lose ≈ 72.2 lb (32.7 kg)
Person B would theoretically need to lose approximately 72.2 lb to reach 10% body fat while preserving all current estimated lean body mass.
The Theoretical Energy Cost of Person B's Cut
Using the same simplified 3,500-calorie-per-pound estimate:
- Total Energy Deficit = 72.2 × 3,500
- Total Energy Deficit ≈ 252,700 calories
If Person B attempted to complete this in the same 12-week period:
- Daily Deficit = 252,700 ÷ 84
- Daily Deficit ≈ 3,010 calories/day
Again, this is not a recommended dieting strategy.
- A 3,000-calorie daily deficit would be an extremely aggressive theoretical calculation and would not represent a sensible muscle-preserving approach for most people.
- The calculation simply demonstrates the enormous difference created by allowing the amount of excess fat to become very large.
Person A vs Person B
- Starting Bodyweight - 180 lb
- Starting Body Fat - 15%
- Starting Estimated Lean Mass - 153 lb
- Current Bodyweight - 220 lb vs 260 lb
- Current Body Fat - 25% vs 35%
- Current Fat Mass - 55 lb vs 91 lb
- Current Estimated Lean Mass - 165 lb vs 169 lb
- Estimated Lean Mass Gain - +12 lb vs +16 lb
- Fat Mass Gain - +28 lb vs +64 lb
- Target Body Fat - 10%
- Theoretical Target Weight - 183.3 lb vs 187.8 lb
- Estimated Weight to Lose - 36.7 lb vs 72.2 lb
The difference is significant.
Person B gained: 40 lb more total bodyweight than Person A.
But Person B gained only: 4 lb more estimated lean body mass.
At the same time, Person B accumulated: 36 lb more fat mass.
And to theoretically reach 10% body fat, Person B would need to lose approximately:
72.2 lb compared with: 36.7 lb for Person A.
That's almost twice as much weight to lose.
Why a Longer Cutting Phase Can Be a Problem
- The problem isn't simply that cutting takes time.
- The bigger issue is what a prolonged calorie deficit can do to your ability to train, recover, and maintain lean tissue.
During a fat-loss phase, the objective should be:
Lose fat while preserving as much muscle as possible.
Several factors can make that more difficult as a diet becomes increasingly aggressive or prolonged.
1. Training Performance Can Decline
As calories become restricted, you may experience reductions in:
- Training energy
- Strength
- Training volume
- Recovery
- Motivation
- Exercise performance
Maintaining resistance training is important because the training stimulus helps provide a reason for the body to retain muscle.
2. Muscle Retention Becomes a Bigger Priority
The longer and more aggressive the deficit, the more carefully you need to manage:
- Protein intake
- Resistance training
- Recovery
- Sleep
- Rate of weight loss
This is why creating an unnecessarily large amount of fat to lose can be counterproductive.
You don't want to spend an enormous amount of time trying to undo weight that didn't need to be gained in the first place.
3. You Spend More Time Away From a Surplus
A calorie surplus is useful during a muscle-building phase.
If you spend a very long period dieting because of excessive fat accumulation, you spend less time in the environment you originally wanted for muscle growth.
This creates a cycle:
- Bulk → Gain too much fat → Long Cut → Bulk Again
A more controlled approach can look like:
- Bulk → Manage Fat Gain → Mini-Cut → Bulk Again
The difference is not that one approach eliminates fat gain.
The difference is how much fat you allow to accumulate before addressing it.
What Is a Mini-Cut?
A mini-cut is a short, planned period of calorie restriction performed during a longer muscle-building phase.
The purpose of a mini-cut is to reduce some accumulated body fat before returning to a calorie surplus.
It is not intended to be:

- A replacement for a properly structured bulk
Instead, think of it as a strategic interruption of a gaining phase.
A simplified long-term approach could look like:
Controlled Bulk → Fat Accumulation → Mini-Cut → Return to Bulk
Then, if necessary:
Bulk → Mini-Cut → Bulk → Mini-Cut
This allows you to manage body composition rather than waiting until you have accumulated a massive amount of fat.
How Mini-Cuts Can Help During a Growing Phase
1. They Help Keep Body Fat Under Control
- Some fat gain during a gaining phase is inevitable for many people.
- The goal isn't to gain muscle with absolutely zero fat gain.
- Instead, the goal is to prevent fat gain from becoming excessive.
- A mini-cut gives you an opportunity to reduce some accumulated fat before continuing your gaining phase.
2. They Can Reduce the Size of a Future Cutting Phase
- This is perhaps the most obvious benefit.
Compare:
- Gain 5–10 lb of excess fat → Mini-Cut → Continue Growing
with:
- Gain 50–70 lb of excess fat → Long Cutting Phase
The first approach can keep individual cutting phases relatively manageable.
The second can create a major dieting phase that takes considerably more time and effort.
3. They Can Make Long-Term Bulking More Sustainable
- A long gaining phase can become psychologically and physically difficult when body fat continues increasing.
You may eventually feel:
- Too heavy
- Less conditioned
- Less comfortable
- Less motivated
- Less satisfied with your physique
A short fat-loss phase can provide a reset before returning to a surplus.
4. They Can Help You Monitor Your Progress
A mini-cut can also function as a checkpoint.
After reducing some body fat, you can reassess:
- Bodyweight
- Waist measurement

Whether continuing the surplus makes sense
This gives you more information about your actual progress.
Instead of blindly continuing to gain weight, you periodically evaluate whether the additional bodyweight is worth accumulating.

One of the biggest advantages of controlling body fat during a long-term gaining phase is that you don't have to start every future cut from an extremely high body-fat level.
This makes the overall process more manageable.
Think of it as maintenance of your physique rather than waiting for a massive correction.
Does Everyone Need a Mini-Cut?
A mini-cut is a strategy, not a requirement.
You don't need to perform a mini-cut simply because you've been bulking for a certain number of months.
Instead, consider your actual progress.
A mini-cut may make sense when:
- Body fat has increased more than you intended
- Your waist is increasing rapidly
- Fat gain is outpacing productive progress
- You want to continue a longer gaining phase
- You are uncomfortable with your current body composition
- You want to reduce accumulated fat before continuing your bulk
A mini-cut may not be necessary when:
- Your surplus is controlled
- Weight gain is gradual
- Body composition remains manageable
- Training performance continues improving
- Recovery is good
- You are still making productive progress
The decision should be based on your body composition and rate of progress, not simply the calendar.
How to Know When Your Bulk Needs a Mini-Cut
There is no universal body-fat percentage at which everyone must mini-cut.
Individual goals, experience, genetics, training status, and personal preferences all matter.
However, some useful signals include:
Your Waist Is Increasing Quickly
- If bodyweight is increasing rapidly and your waist measurement is climbing disproportionately, it may indicate that fat accumulation is becoming excessive.
Your Weight Gain Is Faster Than Planned
- If you're consistently gaining weight much faster than intended, your calorie surplus may be larger than necessary.
Your Physique Is Becoming Noticeably Softer
- If you are gaining bodyweight but most of the visual change is coming from increased body fat rather than muscular development, it may be time to reassess the surplus.
You Are No Longer Comfortable Continuing the Bulk
- Your psychological comfort matters too.
- A gaining phase is supposed to support your long-term goals.
- If you're becoming increasingly uncomfortable with your body composition, a temporary cut may be reasonable.
Don't Make the Opposite Mistake
There is another extreme to avoid.
Some people become so afraid of gaining fat that they barely eat above maintenance.
They constantly try to stay lean while expecting rapid muscle growth.
That can also interfere with progress.
Muscle growth requires:
- Adequate energy
- Adequate protein
- Progressive resistance training
- Recovery
- Time
- Consistency
A successful bulk does not require you to stay at 10% body fat year-round.
Some fat gain is a normal part of gaining for many people.
The goal is not:
- "Gain zero fat."
The goal is:
- "Gain muscle while keeping unnecessary fat gain under control."
The Most Important Lesson: Weight Gain Is Not Muscle Gain
This is the central idea behind the entire article.
Person A gained:
40 lb bodyweight
But approximately:
12 lb estimated lean body mass
and:
28 lb fat mass
Person B gained:
80 lb bodyweight
But approximately:
16 lb estimated lean body mass
and:
64 lb fat mass
So Person B gained twice as much bodyweight but only approximately 4 lb more estimated lean body mass.
This is why chasing the highest possible bodyweight is not necessarily the best strategy for building muscle.
- The scale tells you how much you weigh.
- It does not tell you what you gained.
A Better Long-Term Approach to Bulking
Instead of thinking:
"How much weight can I gain?"
Think:
"How much productive progress can I make while keeping fat gain manageable?"
A more sustainable long-term approach can look like this:
Step 1: Start a Controlled Surplus
- Use a modest calorie surplus rather than trying to force weight gain as quickly as possible.
Step 2: Monitor Your Progress
Track:
- Bodyweight
- Waist measurement
- Training performance
- Strength
- Progress photos
- Estimated body composition
Step 3: Adjust When Necessary
- If weight gain is too fast, reduce calories.
- If weight isn't moving and progress has stalled, reassess calorie intake.
Step 4: Use a Mini-Cut When Appropriate
- If body fat has accumulated beyond your preferred range, temporarily move into a calorie deficit.
Step 5: Return to a Surplus
- Once the mini-cut is complete, return to a controlled gaining phase.
- The objective is to keep repeating productive cycles rather than allowing one bulk to become an unnecessarily long correction project.
Important Note About the Mathematics
The calculations in this article are theoretical estimates, not predictions of exactly what will happen to an individual.
There are several important limitations.
Body-Fat Measurements Are Estimates
- Methods such as bioelectrical impedance, skinfold measurements, visual estimates, and even more advanced methods have varying degrees of accuracy.
- A small error in estimated body-fat percentage can significantly change calculated fat mass and lean body mass.
Lean Body Mass Is Not the Same as Muscle Mass
- Lean body mass includes more than skeletal muscle.
- It also includes water, organs, bone, glycogen, and other non-fat tissues.
- Therefore, if a calculation says someone gained 12 lb of lean body mass, it should not automatically be interpreted as 12 lb of new muscle.
The 3,500-Calorie Rule Is a Simplification
- The commonly cited 3,500 calories per pound is useful as a rough mathematical illustration, but real-world weight loss does not follow a perfectly linear equation.
- Energy expenditure changes as bodyweight changes, and factors such as water, glycogen, activity, appetite, and adaptive responses affect the actual rate of weight loss.
Preserving All Lean Mass Is a Theoretical Assumption
- Our target-weight calculations assume that all current estimated lean body mass is preserved.
- Real-world cutting phases may involve changes in lean tissue, water, glycogen, and other components.
- Therefore, the target bodyweights calculated above should be viewed as theoretical reference points, not guaranteed outcomes.
Final Takeaway
A prolonged bulk isn't automatically bad.
The problem is allowing a gaining phase to continue without controlling the amount of fat being accumulated.
The examples demonstrate why.
Person A gained:
40 lb of bodyweight
with approximately:
+12 lb estimated lean body mass
and:

The goal of a successful bulk isn't to become as heavy as possible. It's to build as much muscle as possible while keeping unnecessary fat gain under control.
