Minerals are essential for hundreds of processes throughout the body. They help regulate fluid balance, nerve signaling, muscle contraction, oxygen transport, energy metabolism, bone health, thyroid function, immune function, and recovery.
You don't need to obsess over every mineral or take a cabinet full of supplements.
The goal is simple: Build a varied diet that consistently provides enough essential minerals—and supplement only when there is a genuine need.
The Major Minerals & Electrolytes
1. Sodium
- Why You Need It: Sodium is the primary extracellular electrolyte. It helps regulate fluid balance and blood volume while supporting nerve transmission and muscle contraction.
- The Reality: Completely eliminating salt is unnecessary for most people. During prolonged exercise, heavy sweating, or training in hot environments, sodium losses can become significant. However, excessive sodium intake can also be harmful, particularly for people with certain health conditions.
- Best Sources: Iodized table salt, salt used in home-cooked meals, soups, and salted foods.
2. Potassium
- Why You Need It: Potassium is the major electrolyte inside your cells. It supports nerve signaling, muscle contraction, normal heart rhythm, fluid balance, and healthy blood pressure regulation.
- The Reality: Potassium works closely with sodium to maintain the electrical gradients required for normal nerve and muscle function. Rather than focusing on a specific "sodium-to-potassium ratio," the practical goal is to eat plenty of potassium-rich whole foods while keeping sodium intake appropriate.
- Best Sources: Bananas, potatoes, sweet potatoes, lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans, spinach, mustard greens, tomatoes, oranges, yogurt, and avocados.
3. Chloride
- Why You Need It: Chloride works with sodium to regulate fluid balance and acid-base balance. It is also a component of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which creates the acidic environment required for normal digestion.
- The Reality: Chloride deficiency is uncommon in people eating a normal diet because chloride is abundant in salt. There is usually no need to track chloride separately.
- Best Sources: Iodized table salt, salted home-cooked foods, and naturally occurring chloride in various foods.
4. Magnesium
- Why You Need It: Magnesium is involved in more than 300 enzymatic reactions, including energy metabolism, ATP utilization, muscle and nerve function, protein synthesis, and bone health.
- The Reality: Inadequate magnesium intake can contribute to muscle weakness, twitching, and impaired neuromuscular function. However, symptoms such as poor sleep, fatigue, and muscle soreness are not specific signs of magnesium deficiency. You don't automatically need a magnesium supplement simply because you train hard.

6. Phosphorus
- Why You Need It: Phosphorus works with calcium in bone mineralization and is also an essential component of ATP, DNA, RNA, and cell membranes. It plays a central role in energy metabolism.
- The Reality: Phosphorus deficiency is uncommon in healthy people eating a varied diet. It is naturally abundant in many protein-rich foods, legumes, grains, nuts, and seeds.

7. Sulfur

- The Reality: Unlike many minerals, sulfur is not normally something you need to supplement. A sufficient and varied protein intake generally provides enough sulfur-containing amino acids.

9. Zinc

- The Reality: Zinc is often marketed as a testosterone booster, but taking extra zinc does not reliably increase testosterone in people who already have adequate zinc status. Long-term high-dose zinc supplementation can also interfere with copper absorption.

10. Iodine
- Why You Need It: Iodine is required by the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones T4 and T3. These hormones influence metabolic rate, energy metabolism, temperature regulation, growth, and development.
- The Reality: Prolonged iodine deficiency can impair thyroid hormone production. However, excessive iodine can also disrupt thyroid function. More iodine does not mean a faster metabolism.

11. Selenium

- The Reality: Copper deficiency is uncommon with a varied diet. However, prolonged high-dose zinc supplementation can interfere with copper absorption and potentially lead to copper deficiency.

13. Manganese

The Golden Rule: More Minerals Is Not Always Better
One of the biggest mistakes in fitness nutrition is assuming that because a mineral is essential, taking more of it will automatically improve health or performance.
It doesn't work that way. Your body needs minerals within an appropriate range.
Too little can cause problems.
Too much can also cause problems.
This is particularly important with supplements.
Excess iron can be harmful.
High-dose zinc can interfere with copper.
Excessive selenium can cause toxicity.
Excessive iodine can disrupt thyroid function.
Large doses of supplemental magnesium can cause gastrointestinal problems.
Excessive calcium supplementation may not be appropriate for everyone.
Mineral interactions are also generally more relevant with high-dose supplements than with normal mixed meals.
The goal is not to maximize mineral intake. The goal is to maintain adequate intake without creating imbalances.
